Hmm ... how can you widen a wheel and retain any structural integrity whatsover? I would feel far safer with replacing the wheels with a wider one instead!

Back in old school , no one made big, wide wheels in offsets and lug patterns for imports. So folks had to have their stock wheels widened. It can be done, and has been done for many years. Plus, I love the style of my wheels, I just want them wider. Plus, I can polish the new lip, and have the middle painted bronze again to have my very own dream wheels.

Wasn't it usually done with steel wheels though? I'd expect aluminum would be more difficult (although not impossible I'm sure).

Hmmmm. Good call. Might not be possible with aluminum wheels. Rats.

I WAS CONSIDERING GETTING A SET OF STEELIES AND WIDENING THEM TO 8'S UP FRONT AND TENS OUT BACK.... BUT THE QUOTES I WAS GETTING IT WAS CHEAPER TO HAVE A COMPANY BUILD ME A WHEEL THAN HAVE THEM WIDEND.

It's done quite often, but it is VERY expensive to properly weld aluminum. If done correctly, the weld is stronger than the rest of the wheel.

Lots of Porsche guys do this to their factory wheels to retain a factory look but step up an inch or two in width.

^, true def, but porsche wheels that are being done are 2 piece wheels. The center part is reused but it's welded to a new hoop

I've seen a few wheels on older 930's and 964's that have a ring welded onto the center of the wheel that had mounting holes, and a section of a BBS 3-pc race wheel was mounted onto this welded ring.

As you can tell - the labor would be ridiculous if someone actually did a proper job. But I guess it might be cheaper than buying some bling-bling P-car wheels in the long run. :)
