Hi all, to begin with I have been searching this for the past few days but cant find anything compared to the build im doing so I thought I would ask to get some opinions. The motor is a RB20DET My power goal is somewhere around 400whp, is this reasonable with this build? Also can this be done on a rom tune or will I need to go standalone? (Don't tell me to get a sr, rb/25/26/30)

I'm in the process of gathering the rest of the parts I need to finish this build but here are the specs:

Block: (Full Oem Gasket kit)
-Acl Main & rod bearings
-Vg20 Rings from Hastings (Either standard or the upgraded chrome upper ring kit)
-Polished Crank
-Decked
-Cylinder honed
-Stock pistons cerakoted both tops and skirts
-Stock rods
-Stock Oil & water pump

Head: (Full Oem Gasket kit)
-Decked
-Port and polish
-Stock cams for now, once motor is broke in ill look into either cams or cam gears (Can use some input here)

Misc:
-Tomei Head gasket
-Tomei Oil galley orifice restrictor
-New stock timing component kit, possibly oem timing belt but also considering a gates Racing belt (Some input here would be useful also)
-Arp Head studs
-Block, head, in/ex manifold, intercooler, radiator, all cerakoted with Transfer Grey (Heat Dissipating Coating)
-Full 3" Turbo back
-FMIC
-Aftermarket intake manifold
-Walbro 255
-Lightweight flywheel
-Spec stage 3 clutch
-Once motor is broke in on the stock manifold, turbo, injectors they will be upgraded to the appropriate requirements for my power goals.

my concern would be 400 whp on stock internals. i mean obviousely you have the engine open and apart. i would 100% spend the cpl extra bucks on pistons, rods, and fasteners. oil and water pumps wouldn't hurt either. also your last line says it all.....mani/turbo/inj upgrade.....400whp can be made on any engine with upgrades. just mho.

Been their done that, I don't see the turbo your going to use? Standalone would be a faster route but Nistune would be cheaper but more headaches. I would also get some ARP rod bolts if you haven't already done the motor work. A meth kit with boost juice will help a ton. I made 415whp (430whp meth injected) on mine @ 18psi with a yestertech Precision SC61 turbo but I also have 270 cams and valve springs. My setup is laggy it's more of a drag race / highway puller. Good luck with your setup

Thing with doing internals its not a couple extra hundred on a rb20, its a couple grand for internals, & fasteners. Upgraded oil pump and water pump are easily over a grand each.

Turbo I plan on using is either a gtx2871r or a modded rb25 turbo. Not sure on injectors yet. I can still do rod bolts, do the mains need to be done also or should those be good?

Also what are your guy's opinions on the internal engine coatings? Worth it or skip it?

sorry. not a couple hundred, but $1200 gets you pistons, rings, fasteners and rods. which is like $600-$800 cheaper than u can get for a 25 or 26. def seems better spent there than on other things like internal coatings and s***

I dunno if you can click off 400whp with that 2871. If you do It's going to take a lot of boost maybe 26psi with E85 I could happen.

I'm curious as to what you're running on your rb20 Yellow4g63

Yestertech SC61, tomie 270 cams and valve springs, 800cc injectors,AEM S2, HK$ evc 4,Supra TT fuel pump,Rips intake manifold, Protech-Fabrication turbo manifold and down pipe just recently added AEM meth injection kit running snow performance Boost Juice. When I did the 400+whp I didn't have the Meth injection hooked up. It's not too complicated setup just the turbo sucks for anything other than drag racing and highway pulls. Tried road racing with it and it wasn't fun on a small tight course. I plan on getting a newer billet turbo and going down on the size to a entry level 5558 or so.
