Anybody have any ideas on what kind of oil to refill an empty convertible top hydraulic pump motor with? Shop manual says 10w engine oil, everyone I've called tells me that they haven't seen straight 10w engine oil in years. Had people suggest 10w-30 instead, or ATF, or power steering fliud, or jack oil, etc..etc..etc. I'm doing a complete rebuild and replacement of my entire top assembly and would hate to ruin it by putting the wrong oil in the pump. Local Nissan dealer didn't have a clue, basically blew me off. Someone out there must have some experience with working on these pumps. Help!!!!

hmm i wish i knew the answer, but i think 10w-30 would work....anyway i remember someone posting on here about not using ATF, and btw power steering fluid can be substituded with ATF, so I guess stay away from both

motor oil has stuff in it that might possibly be bad for a hydraulic system.I used 5W compressor oil and mine works fantastic. It is meant for the same type of system. It can be purchased at most hardware stores or Sears etc. that sell compressors.

The FSM does state 10w motor oil.

I agree that a specialty compressor oil would work very well for this. Otherwise, I'd use a synthetic 10w-30 motor oil.

After looking at posts and talking to people about type of oil I decided to go with compressor oil. My local Ace Hardware store has compressor oil that is petroleum based so it should be similar to engine oil. Most hydraulic oil and jack oils are mineral based so there might be an issue with the seals. Thanks for all of the advice....

Hydrolic oil is correct. I'm changing my oil too in the pump. So not knowing I called Nissan and spoke with the shop steward and he said he new what I was talking about and said Hydrolic oil, for jacksSo I went to BAP and bought some. I don't have an Operators manual and I believe the guys gotta know what he's talkin' 'bout.

If you have a Home Depot near you they should have it. It is near the lawn equipment parts and the lawnmower oils. It is hydraulic fluid in a white bottle ISO 32/ 10W oil. It is a one gallon container made by Power Care. This is the oil you need.
