What kind of gasoline am I supposed to use?

I was reading the owners manual on this and I don't get it.....

It says you should buy gas with an "anti knock index" of 87 (research octane number 91).

Can anybody kindly tell me what the hell this means? I've always just used regular, which is always 87 at the pump. So am I supposed to be use 87 or 91 here?

Use 87.

The Research Octane Number is the international standard for rating octane.

In the United States and Canada, the pumps use Anti-Knock Index units.

Using higher octane gasoline on an engine designed to run optimally on 87 won't be detrimental to the engine - just your wallet.

You don't stand to gain anything running higher than 87 octane in your Versa.

Higher octanes don't really help with economy engines or engines that aren't designed for them. It'd be bad if you had a Z and were using 87 instead of 91/93.
