I'm curious as to what brand/model clutch/flywheel you road racers are running out there? I'm looking for something respectable on the track but I still drive the car on the street (Not as a daily but special occasions) so I can afford something harsh but nothing ridiculous.

So, post your:Vehicle/Engine:Usage:Clutch Model/Brand:Flywheel Model/Brand:Thoughts:

I'll start it out.

If you are SERIOUSLY looking at getting into road racing, then you need to figure out which santioning body / class you want to race with and in. Make sure there are no limitations on what type of clutch you can run, and if there are(There usally are) then put that style clutch in. If you mean track days/HPDE/PDX and not actual road racing, then you choices will be much more open. I have no suggestions for good clutches.

91 miata 1.6L Long nose crank - stockSCCA SOLOII STS2, and a little street usageOEM Style Parts store clutch OEM flywheel, resurfaced at least onceI am limited to stock OEM replacement clutches, so I didn't have much of a choice on what clutch I could run. Stock power, stock clutch, stock flywheel, works fine, just like any other stock car.

This has been up for two days and only a miata owner has replied, common guys... Not asking for a whole bunch of your time just looking for what clutch you are running and if you like it.

Vehicle/Engine: '96 S14 KA24DE and S14 Blacktop SR20detUsage: SCCA STX (ka) and SM/SM2 (sr) limited street usageClutch Model/Brand: XTD Stage 2 clutch (ka) Exedy Stage 2 Cerametallic clutch (sr)Flywheel Model/Brand: XTD Flywheel (ka) no name aluminum flywheel, resurfaced once (sr)Thoughts: Well it all comes down to class... I used to play in a class that you had standards to what you could and couldnt do with the ka. And thats the whole car too. A simple piece of c/f or a fixed seat or stripped interior pushes you from one class to the next so after my whole swap ive just moved to SM2. Its what you call the "Run what ya Brung" class Basically boxing with supercharged mustangs and what not. The ka clutch/flywheel worked plenty well and it was an ebay special... some lost gain but nothing to bad to be picky about. The exedy for the sr is going to get replaced, im not a fan of ceramic anything. Im looking into kevlar right now, prolly a 6puc design. It all comes down to what your willing to do with the car and your racing. Now if your wondering between kevlar/carbon/ceramic and then the brands that go into those vs sprung design and what not... thats a whole nother thing. When i race i hit 2nd gear as fast as possible and use the clutch to control throttle the whole race so my clutches get there share of use.

Good luck!

How do you use your clutch to control the throttle??? I usually use the throttle and or brakes for that. Once I shift I never touch the clutch, that is unless I spin, then its both feet in. I LFB BTW.

I prefer to be able to toe/heel the brake and throttle when necessary. i use the clutch to cover response so i dont need to let off on the throttle as often as others. its more dependant on the course, but i rarely LFB simply because ive got a heavy left foot lol. once i get that into check i might consider changing styles. i learned the clutch technique from one of our guys in the solo II class, and he was doin it with an mr2 of all things.

So you slip the clutch to keep the rev's up / scrubb speed, instead of using the brakes, while keeping the throttle planted?

I will keep the gas mashed and modulate my brakes to scrub speed, usually on sweepers and sometimes on slaloms. But I have never used the clutch. I would think it would upset the balance too much. I must say you are the first person to ever mention doing it that I have seen. As long as it works for you. I don't think I will try it soon.

It's kind of weird; I don't left brake my care except in competition, I will LFB my work truck and my wifes car some times, but they are both slushboxes. But when I get in the car to go run at an autox, as soon as I shift into second, my left foot moves over to the brake. I don't even think about it, it just happens automatically. I just started LFB last year. If I may make a suggestion; try LFB on the street before you do it at an autox, especially if you can find an auto to drive, it makes it much easier. I started doing it the first time I drove a friends Miata. I had seen enough people spin his car, and new it was set up to rotate really well, so I just went for it. I used the brakes WAY to much but I never spun it. It is a handy tool to have. Plus i think there was a side bet on how many times / where I would spin his car.
