I wouldnt bother trying to clean it especially since it could damage the hot wire element. What sometimes happens is that the MAFS (or other sensors) will throw a code for no reason. What you did was right, you checked for codes, then by unplugging and replugging the MAFS the ECU was reset to normal. Basically if the MAFS is running fine now then theres no need to clean it because its working fine, no point in messing with it and possibly messing it up.
But if you must clean it, use the electronics safe cleaners, not carb cleaner.
