It would seem that the trophies are controlled by the gamer publisher.

PS3 now supports pretty much full use of the XMB in game, now when you press the PS button rather then the few options it had before the XMB screen pops up. They also added a level system, and a trophy system. The trophy system shows up under the game menu, and is similar to xbox....however until the devolpers patch them in very few games support it right now (though it has only been a day or two)

They have also added the ability to play music off your hard drive in game, however like the trophies this must be supported by the game...so its currently limited to a few of the smaller releases from the sony store.

PS3 firmware 2.40 was published Wednesday, but from what I hear there were quite a few problems with it bricking systems, so it has been removed until they work that out.

It will likely be a little while before the majority of games have achievements, but the capability is at least there...we are just waiting for games to support it.

IMO, at least now we get in game chat with friends, it was ridiculous that this wasn't supported since the beginning... this at least makes the chat feature worth while.

Aren't the trophies eventually going to be integrated into Home when it finally gets released? I recall hearing something to that effect a LONG time ago.

yeah, somewhere in your personal space in HOME you'll have a trophy case where everybody can look at your gaming achievements
