What is this? There doesn't seem to be a tube attached to the inverted U-shaped metal pipe—is that how it's supposed to be?

Hello,

I have a 1996 Nissan 240SX (S14) and I noticed a small inverted U-shaped metal pipe coming from the transmission area.

It looks like there should be a hose attached to the end, but on my car nothing is connected. I’m not sure if this is normal or if a hose is missing.

Is this pipe supposed to be a transmission breather/vent line, or should something actually be connected to it?

It does have a breather coming out of the tail housing, if maybe that's what you're looking at. See 31098ZA in this parts diagram:
