Fuel tank vapor canister. When your tank heats up, the gasoline expands and the vapor becomes pressurized. The canister is there to absorb some of that and the motor pulls a vacuum on the other side of it to burn the fuel vapor for emissions purposes. Plus it keeps your interior from smelling like gas all the time.
