I am uncertain what this sound is once the car shuts off. :wtf2:

The short time the engine able to run sounds terrible , and has the bad noises running , and running-on after seems to have same sick noises . Getting the car running ' smooth ' again probly comes first , parts needed there may be the cure-all ?
Rubber hose as stethoscope can pinpoint noises . A stethoscope can pinpoint noises :rotflmao better?

Yep, +1. Sounds like it's building up pressure someplace it shouldn't be, then venting it after it stalls. Figure out why it's running crappy and the noise will probably fix itself.

I would look up a diagram of your hoses and make sure everything is routed properly for your PCV system, replace your PCV valve, then check on the wiring to all spark plugs and coil packs, and take a look at all of your spark plugs to ensure none are fouled up.

Honestly, that sounds like the crankcase getting pressurized by bad stem seals, cracked rings, or something along those lines. I think I'd make sure it has compression before looking at any of the plumbing.

It was the powering steering hose that’s pinched. Glad it was nothing serious.

And un-pinching that hose solved the engine stalling issue?

No. The stalling seems to be a timing issue. I’ll have my mechanic fully diagnose it and figure out what’s causing that as soon as he has time.

Is this vehicle new to you or have you been driving it when these issues suddenly appeared?

I'll be back in for updates, this is interesting.

I bought this car about a month ago for $1000. I knew it had problems but didn’t mind a project car. The kid who had it before me didn’t take good care of it and he stated it was in limp mode. The secondary cats were stolen and O2 sensors were damaged. I replaced the missing cats and added new O2 sensors. I’ve also replaced the old crankshaft and camshaft sensors. I’ve also replaced the throttle assembly for the throttle position sensor as the car dies as soon as you press the pedal. I believe it’s a timing issue based on what the engine sounds like. Next I plan to replace the VVT solenoids but only after I’ve confirmed it’s a timing issue.

I have a mechanic that will do all the heavy lifting for me but since he’s been busy, I’ve tried to do what I could in the meantime.

BTW, I’ve watched all your videos and have learned how to repair my own M’s with them. Thank you for all you’ve done. You’re the king of info for all of us here.

P.S. I cannot scan for codes as I get an error message that the ECM is not found. I have power to the DLC and all fuses are good, including IPDM. It’s most likely a loose ground or wire connected to the DLC which I cannot check since I don’t have a multimeter. I also have no control to climate control or radio so that leads me to believe something electronic is not connected properly as the previous owner did a lot of tinkering with the car blindly without knowing what he was doing.

The ignition and battery fuses to the DLC share nothing in common, so your hunch about it being a ground issue is probably right. You can find the DLC layout here on Pg 605:
https://www.nicoclub.com/service-manual ... 2%2Fec.pdf

Both the Black pin 4 and Black/White pin 5 wires need ground. A meter isn't the best tool to check it, use a bulb-type test lamp. Putting the gator lead of the lamp on the ground pin instead of the chassis verifies the ground wire, if it will light the lamp normally then it has enough ground for your scanner to work. So going between the Batt (7,16) and Ignition (8) wires and the DLC grounds on 4-5 verifies the the entire power circuit on both sides.

Did a little investigating and pulled all the plugs.

That has to be an injector issue. If we call the lower left #1, then #2 is lean, #5 and #6 are rich, and #4, #7 and #8 are all b_tch-rich.

Yep they’re pretty bad. #1 has a burnt coil that seems to be caused by a bad ground in the harness. The rest are bad due to what seems as a bad valve cover gasket that was replaced but plugs weren’t.
