What is this part and where does it go?
I have done a fresh ka24de swap into my 95 240sx here recently and i am stumped as to where this particular piece goes. any help would be greatly appreciated..

Transmission vent tube is my first guess.

does it serve any vital purpose? dont want to drop the transmission if it isnt that important.

Shouldn't have to drop it anyway. There should be a tube somehwere on the side/top of transmission that vents to the atmosphere, it is there in case the transmission is overfilled or build pressure for the transmission fluid to run out.
