"Shrill" sounds hint that it may be the power steering unit, or the belt/pulley assembly. Check p/s fluid level, belts, and tensioner. Fluid leaks from the reservoir hose are common.

If the sound is more toward the center, it may be the water pump (more like a squeak though).

There's a recent thread on checking the other pulleys too:

Sounds like one or both of the chain tensioners are bleeding down.At start up there would be slack in the chain(s) until the oil pressure builds up.My Bro's '93 Q45 does it too. Takes a week or so.

Been staring at the plug change I need do them soon. No guide change. Have owned it 10 years and got my money out of it already.Las Vegas is changing fast. Not the same town.Still, I am away from the city center where there is still some peace and quiet.Use to hang some at the other forum.

Mine hasn't made any noise, yet. My brothers does it only after it sits more than a week which is rare. Has been doing it since 60k.Originally fron Glendora, I have family still there along with Newport Beach and San Clemente.Green Valley you mean "Hank" Greenspun Valley now Brian Greenspun Valley. Brian, Bill Clinton's buddy and Loco Democrat wanting to raise taxes on property owners instead of these fat casinos.I know taxes not as bad as Calif, yet!

hhso i can assume the noise comes from needing the new chain guides, would you say?

tensioner is loose or something and needs replacement?apparantly this is a huge issue amongst the owners.

I think if they bleed down every time you start the car or after it sits overnight or even just a couple days, then yes, I would replace all four valve chain guide/tensioners including oil chain guide.

Check what oil was used last service. I had some oil in my 94Q, & it made some awful noises when started, if I left it for a few days, so I changed it back to Valvoline DuraBlend, & all the noises stopped, even if it sits for a week. :D

We have a great range of Durablend here, you can have anything as long as it is 10w-40. Seems to be the perfect blend for the Q. :D
