While not a PHD in auto thermodynamics or mechanics and having NOT spent 10,000 + hours working on Q's, I'm not qualified to even own a Q let alone turn wrench on one. But, I'd bet money that gizmo is there to prevent your CAT from setting the grass on fire should you park in a field some day. Don't laugh, this actually happened in Virginia hunt country a few years ago at a polo match. Several VERY expensive cars were totaled by the conflagration.
My cat shield landed in a dumpster long ago. I don't park on grass unless it's damp.
