Hi, all.

A question somewhat related to an earlier thread (to which I did not get an answer):

http://www.nissaninfiniticlub....ilter

When I had my recent oil change done, I just noticed on the service order that they used a 15208-9E000 oil filter instead of what is recommended in the M45 manual, i.e., a 15208-31U00.

Is this a problem? What are the differences between these two filters? I would like to know if I should go back to the dealer and harass them to install the correct filter!

Hi, Wes.

Yes, Q45 filters were different. They went from a 15208-60U00 to a 15208-55Y00 and discontinued the old one. The 15208-31U00 is not discontinued and it is what is stated in the manual for the M45.My problem is that I do not know what the 15208-9E000 is or what models of Nissan/Infiniti it is intended for! That is my reason for the question ...

I guess I will have to call the Infiniti Customer Service folks and ask. Was hoping NICO members knew about this other filter!

Or a less ideal filter, cheaper to make in Mexico than to import from Japan..............that might allow things to wear a little faster as the engines already last too long.

The average car on the road is now almost 9 years old and Nissans typically last 15 years.............way too long to make new car dealers or the EPA happy.

I'd call Joe at Infiniti of Scottsdale. He's great about looking these things up - and he can tell you if there's a part supercession. Just order an air filter or two from him from time to time for his troubles... :D

The 15208-9E000 oil filter is used on the 1996 I30.

Szhosain, we get the 9E000 filters for the M-45. Now there were some folks concern on some 2001 I30's regarding some of the engines had a 65F00 filter and others had the 9E000 filter. The 65F00 filter is an inch or so shorter, but you could use either filter with no problem. From the factory, the engines with the oil cooler had the short filter, and ones without the cooler took the longer (9E000) filter. There are no differences at all regarding the filter characteristics. I spoke with Infiniti engineering regarding some customers concern regarding the filter, there reply was that the filter change was in the middle of the production year, and some of the engines at the factory were installed persay a week early, or late, so the production date may show the engine to have either filter. All Infiniti filters have the check valve, and filter the engine oil according to specifications. I've been with Infiniti/Nissan for many years, and they change part numbers like clock work on numerous items. Occasionally, if the item in question of being a possible updated design, may occur when you have supercession numbers from say an 15208-9E000 to a 15208-9E001 and so on, but doesn't always mean a design change. Rule of thumb, change your oil and filter every 3,750 miles and your engine will thank-you in the long run!

A revival of this thread is needed.

I went to pick up a new oil filter for my M45 (reached 3750 happy miles!) and the Infiniti dealer, and the Nissan dealer down the street, said that the 9E000 is the replacement version of the 31U00.

Okay-y-y-y-y. But when I got the filter in my hands, I was shocked at how small it is! Is this really what Infiniti wants on an 8 cylinder engine?!? With the amount of oil that flows through it? This filter is tiny compared to the ones for the first-gen Q45's!

Autotech43, you are right about the 65F00 being even smaller  . I guess I would not consider that as an option at all for an M45 or Q45.

Comments, anyone?

Well, there is always the Mobil1 filter, for a few dollars more.

They may be cheaper on the long run.

The 31U00 & 9E000 are exactly the same oil filter. They superceded the 31U00 about three years ago. Believe it or not the 9E000 is the correct filter for the M45, 2nd gen & 3rd gen Q45, FX45, 3.0L I30, & 3.3L QX4. All of the VQ35 engines call for a 65F00, which is the same diameter but a bit shorter. Other engine applications for the 9E000 filter:KA24DE (L30 &D22U)VG33E (R50)VQ20DE (Europe only)

Ah! Thanks for the info. I was just a bit surprised since the 2003 owner's manual for the M45 called for the 31U00 number.Quote »Believe it or not the 9E000 is the correct filter for the M45, 2nd gen & 3rd gen Q45, FX45, 3.0L I30, & 3.3L QX4. Compared to what I have been used to in the past, on other cars, as well as the one for first-gen Q45, it surprises me that the amount of oil flowing does not cause problems with the lowered filtration surfaces [that must exist] in these small filters.

P.S. What is your price for the filter and crush washer? (One-sies and also more quantities).

On a separate note, I went to change my oil and filter over this last weekend, and realized that I really need to have it up on a lift. The shield below the engine needs to be removed as far as I can tell, and it is not easy to reach under the car as it stands. Can't just jack it up since the car needs to be reasonably level to drain all the oil. Argh!

What do other folks do in this regards? (Besides taking filter and oil to a oil-changer place?)
