pretty much same thing as the turbo except instead of running off of exhaust gasses, the compressor is spun by a direct pully. This is why boost off of superchargers comes much quicker: because it is spinning as fast as it needs to right away, where turbos need to wait for more exhaust gasses (more revs) to spin faster. OR you could learn how to use the internet. Google man, google.

Give him a break.. he asked an honest question and was polite about it.

Just to give you a very basic idea of what "boost" means in regard to turbos and superchargers... it is forcing (compressing) air into the combustion chamber. The more the air is compressed, them more oxygen in the fuel/air mixture. This leads to a more powerful combustion.

As was mentioned earlier.. a turbo goes about this using an exhaust driven turbine to force air induction. A supercharger is belt driven, and can be found in several different configurations. I believe the most common type is a twin cork-screw device that compresses the air. There are also centrifugal and a few other types.

I always check howstuffworks.com when I errr...need to know how something works. :)

They've got a crap load of cool stuff on there, including but not limited to auto stuff.

This isn't anything that hasn't already been explained in this thread, but there are some cool links to follow.

Correct... Vortech, Paxton Novi, and the Prochargers are examples of CENTRIFUGAL superchargers. They look like a turbo on the compressor side, but have a cog belt driving them.

Weiand, Jackson Racing, Blitz are examples of a Eaton or Roots supercharger. They are large "box" shaped superchargers with two screws in them. All stock superchargers are roots type, including the Lightning, Cobra, Mercedes, etc.
