Just to give you a very basic idea of what "boost" means in regard to turbos and superchargers... it is forcing (compressing) air into the combustion chamber. The more the air is compressed, them more oxygen in the fuel/air mixture. This leads to a more powerful combustion.
As was mentioned earlier.. a turbo goes about this using an exhaust driven turbine to force air induction. A supercharger is belt driven, and can be found in several different configurations. I believe the most common type is a twin cork-screw device that compresses the air. There are also centrifugal and a few other types.
Correct... Vortech, Paxton Novi, and the Prochargers are examples of CENTRIFUGAL superchargers. They look like a turbo on the compressor side, but have a cog belt driving them.
Weiand, Jackson Racing, Blitz are examples of a Eaton or Roots supercharger. They are large "box" shaped superchargers with two screws in them. All stock superchargers are roots type, including the Lightning, Cobra, Mercedes, etc.
