What is staggered???

Sorry if this is a stupid question but i see the word "staggered" used a lot when talking about certain rims and i was wondering what the heck it mean... thanks guys...

staggered mean two different size rims. like example 18x8 in front and 18x9 in rear. one set has to be bigger then the other. thats it .
