What is "fail-safe" mode?

In some cases, when the computer reads a problem code, the computer can go into "safe mode" which lowers the redline, and goes into a closed loop to save from "catastrophic failure". If you are in safe mode, I would get the code and fix the problem. Whatever the check engine light is on for, its a serious issue, not just a bad sensor or whatever.
