Just getting used to my new M45 . I can not feel any difference in the behaviour of the car wether the transmission is in D , or manually put in 5th gear . Any thoughts ?

Will it still downshift automatically, in the Manu 5 mode?

I have only test drove am M45, and it was super tight, with only a few hundred miles on it, so I didn't want to push it in "D" mode, or in the "Manu" mode. I did not see any difference.

I do recall a review saying there was not much difference in the 2 modes, under WOT operation.

I gues, once you reach the top gear, there is no difference.

the nissan trannies only limit your top gear, the transmission will still downshift normally to any gears below the one you selected. so if you select "5", the transmission has all the gears it is used to and will act normally.

It may or may not lock-up in 5th, I think that is a TCU logic check to make the T/C lock up only under certain conditions (one of which is the selector is in D). the AT G35 has the same transmission as your M. I have a copy of the AT G35 ESM at home. It should have the exact same logic as your M.

IF it is as I said, then you should feel more torque in 5 than D while cruising in lock up conditions (translated to quicker throttle response when not locked up), but if the TCU logic decides that the T/C shouldn't lock up while you are cruising in D, there will be no difference.

I may be wrong about this, but it is my understanding that the shift points (speed and rpm) change when the car is in "Manual" mode. The setting is merely the selector for the highest gear it will use.

I do not really use the up-down selector much. For normal in-town driving, I set it to "4" and leave it there and only switch over to "D" when on the highway.
