What is a inhibitor switch

I looked up the codes I was getting from my ecu and one was the knock sensor, which I can take care of, but it was also flashing code 111 and it is referenced as inhibitor switch. What exactly is this? I have a manual transmission and it looks as though this pertains to the automatic transmission. Searchin brought up only people with auto transmissions as well.

The only way you should have an inhibitor is if your car started life as an auto and was swapped to a standard, which is common.
