What exactly is a downpipe and what does it do? Is it necessary for the swap?

On turbo cars, the downpipe comes off the turbo. The exhaust discharge flows through it, then through your cat/test pipe, then through the rest of your exhaust. Yes it is necessary.

No offense, but I do not think that you are ready for boost. When your motor is no longer NA, more maintenance is required.

eniety is right. i think you need to do some more learning before you drive a car w/ forced induction.

i'm afraid i agree, somethings just are not for everyone, like i would not expect to be given a tiger to take care of, i'm just not skilled enuff, start with just your plain old 240sx, drive it for a year or two, do some NA upgrades, learn about the motor how it works, how your car drives, then worry about FI later.
