Info for those of us currently in "no mans' land" -- where our Ms are out of the factory warranty but still eligible for purchase of an extended warranty.

Although mine only has 35K on it, it's approaching it's 5 year anniversary. As it has always been serviced at Infiniti dealers, I have had two MAJOR repairs done in the last two months, that Infiniti covered, even though I am out of warranty; the crank shaft sensor replaced and the dash cluster was just replaced this week. all at no charge.

Before I shell out $1,500 to $2,000 for what would amount to an additional 3 years and 35,000 miles of coverage, I wanted to get a sense of what other fellow M owners (2003 and 2004) have had replaced/repaired that would be considered major (over $300 ? ? ?). If we can compile a list of the repairs AND approx. $$, Ithink many of us could make a more intelligent decision.

If I have had the majority of the major issues already fixed, then I might take my chances and use that $2K towards services and other repairs that crop up. Thanks --

Just two weeks before my original factory warranty expired I had an airbag light come on. I took it in for the airbag and was having trouble with my sunroof motor as well. They replaced the drivers side airbag module and also the sunroof motor. I also complained about my steering wheel peeling after some persuading the also replaced it. I did not get any prices on the repairs due to it being warranty but they told me the wheel was $1000. I would guess the airbag module between $300-$500 for the part and probly about $200 to $300 for the motor. Who knows about labor. I was planning on adding the warranty and did at this time. $1700 for 48 months or 48,000 miles. Mine is an '04 fully loaded that will roll 30k next week.

Just an FYI you can put 10% down and then they will do 12 equal payments billed to your credit card. They do not charge any interest either.

Here's my synopsis so far, from reading many of the posts here:* * * * * most common problems * * * * *

1. fuel gauge error requiring replacement of the instrument cluster. Approx. ~ $650 for the repair (Infiniti should cover this)2. Exhaust weld where the main pipe enters the resonator (someone confirm that has has this repair done) ~$1,200 parts and labor to replace BUT often a muffler shop can re-weld for ~$40.3. Crankshaft sensor (hard starting/no start condition) R&R sensor around ~$300 repair -- BUT -- look under NHTSA and this appears to be a recall4. Engine/Piston rings & oil consumption. Some cars might not have been broken in properly leading to excessive oil consumption (defined as a quart or more in under 1,000 miles - someone confirm) ~$6,000 or more to R&R engine. Infiniti has replaced engines under "warranty" on most of these.

WHAT ELSE GUYS?

RANDOM ISSUES1. airbag warning light/module2. moonroof motor3. Steering weel peeling4. Gear shift knob fading/discoloration5. squeeky seat track

My '03 M45 has 35,600 miles on it.

I had the trunk struts replaced, gauge cluster (fuel gauge problem which just showed up about a month ago), and a front brake caliper rebuilt (a piston in one of my front calipers was frozen. Probably due to the fact that it sits in the garage all winter long) within the past month. All covered under my extended warranty. (BTW... a frozen piston in a brake caliper makes the car shake under braking just like you have warped rotors due to the uneven braking pressure applied).

I still have a little under 4 years and 53,600 miles to go on my warranty. My guess is that something will stop working in that time. Especially since it spends the winters parked (I hate driving it in the snow or rain, it feels unsafe) as that's probably worse than driving the crap out of it. Maybe in 2015 when I plan on replacing my car, I'll get the X version unless I live somewhere warm all year round.

I don't sell the Infinity warranties at this time, but I would be glad to get you the info if you like!

I've gotten a few items replaced under the extended warranty:Instrument cluster replaced due to fuel gauge giving improper readingDriver side seat motorCD changer

On another note I have 58k miles on my 03' and the factory warranty is going to be covering my new engine so I'm happy I won't have to pay the deductible. They also said it would have cost me 10k for the new engine alone if I had no warranty.

Hello,Let's see. I have had the TPMS system reset, a new steering wheel, new shift knob, and last week I had the rear view mirror replaced. Glad the mirror was covered as it is a over $600.00 part. Steering Wheel is about a grand. The non auto dimming one is way, way cheaper. And also, I had a rattle vanquished under warranty.

So far, no fuel gauge issue. I have the Infiniti Elite for 3 more years though.Cheers,ML

I'm fascinated at this list. Aside from a little oil burn at start up, I've had none of these issues. (I did see that the po had the steering wheel replaced though....)

58K miles so far ...and I drive it hard. It's going on a hard driving, heavily loaded, high speed, 1200 mile trip in a few weeks too.

Hello,All of the things I had done were cosmetic aside from the TPMS sensor which needed to be replaced. Cold weather seems to make the sensors fritz and I was in Colorado... Steering wheel was peeling at the top of the wheel. Could not even be visually seen. Darn glad to get it replaced. The rear view mirror stopped dimming at night. This happened on my previous car (Acura TL) and I am almost positive both companies use the same oem supplier. My natural wood colored shift knob began to take on the color of pond scum.Cheers,ML
