So not sure how often they go bad. But does anyone have an experiences that they could share with me. When it has gone bad what happens? What was the motor doing?

For SR20DET.

The motor doesnt run. I havent heard of one going bad naturally. The only CAS I ever saw that was bad was when the laser etched disc had been crunched. The engine never ran with it like that, it just would make loud popping noises.

The gear that rotates with the exhaust camshaft is connected to a laser etched disc with 360 holes put into it. At the major corners (0, 90, 180, 270 degrees) there are different shaped holes. As the cam spins, it spins the disc, and a laser is shot through the disc. When the laser hits a hole in the disc it sends a pulse to the ECU, the different shaped holes are for ignition of the spark plugs.

btw, speed. I have seen a CAS go bad naturally. It's a rare case, but it does happen. Just like any other electronic piece, something fries or just stops working and then the part goes bad. But they've always been very old, and been weathered. CA CASes seem to go out more often than SR CASes
