What happened to punk rock?

As I sit here in the cybercafe typing without pants I`m watching Mtv Japan. I`m watching a Simple Plan video and it hits me, punk music is some pathetic whiny crap these days. I wrote a song, somebody pick up a guitar, play three or four chords while you whine the lyrics, a few ballpoint pen home made tatoos and a red mohawk and you can be the next "punk rocker"

J-rock will always be superior to american rock.

The current trend in punk has moved the context of the lyrics to the emotions of the singer. The good punk from years ago was more about political message.

Maybe that's why I listen to ska, at least they break up the two tone harmony with raggea style.

I am an emo fan myself, but my roots are in punk. I had a Blink 182 CD on the other night at work (working restock at Target overnight SUCKS) cuz I needed something peppy that I could ignore and this guy comes up to me:

Him: "I love Blink!"Me: "Yeah, they are good live. Funny as hell."Him: "Cool. I love punk."Me: "Um, not really punk man. They're pop."Him: "POP!?!!" No way man. They are real punk."Me: and walk away

For real, I have been to Blink shows and punk shows, and you can tell punk by who is there. Blink concet attendees average age is 15 and buy out Hot Topic before going to the show. Got my *** kicked in the pit at Rancid/Anti-Flag. Good times:)

But crap like SUM41, Simple Plan, Sugarcult (who SUCKS live), and others that call themselves "punk" are just lying to themselves.

their biggest problem is that they're Canadian and not Rush.

Blink 182 was a good underground band, they just got really radio friendly as of late. The new album isn't bad, but it's very different from the others.

Pop Punk is a category in itself. It's more or less the bands we'd consider to be fairly easy to listen to. You know, bands like Goldfinger, the Offspring, now Rancid...

oh, The Ramones would be pop punk too. And Generation X...

This is why I classify it as what I want to call it, and not as what they call themselves.

My brother *****es and calls what I listen to "pop" and crap, I don't really care. He listens almost singularly to techno... which in its own right is just fine, but variety, please?

Anyways, my point is that I think it's ridiculous to sit and complain about it. Listen to what you like, don't listen the the rest, you have a choice. No one forces anything down your throat (cept at work... we have to listen to the Top 40 station unless no one is at the pool... God that sucks).

edit: No, it's not that I like the bands you hate. I can't stand Sum41 either, for instance.

I dont consider anything on MTV even slightly punk rock. Its all emo kids now, talking about high school girls. Real punk is stuff like The Vandals, OLD AFI stuff, toxic narcotic, the virus.....

They founded Nitro records, one of the leading labels for punk.

I didn`t hear Ska until I got to Japan, love it, great fun party music. I like a lot of Japanese stuff although here recently Japanese people want to be black so rock is getting pushed to the back in favor of lame wannabe rappers wearing Fubu and calling themselves "gangster"I don`t know of any real punk bands these days, I like Sex Pistols, Exploited and Bad Religion for punk. The pop-punk I can do without it makes me want to snatch the singer and show him what real pain feels like.

punk has always sucked, if your talking about true underground punk. The drum beats were always to fast for headbanging or jumpin around, it just sucked *ss. If you want to here a somewhat punk band that rocks, listen to Story of the Year. They *****in rock! :ylsuper

Good charlette(sp?) started all of it from what I can remember. People looked at them and said "hey, they look all hard core and stuff, and I won't get funny looks if I listen to them going down the road. So now I can be cool and listen to punk rock!"

Of course other bands helped lead up to that point, but I just completely loose respect for anyone who says they like GC, they just plain suck.

hell yeah, i cant take a band seioursly when they dress like that and try to sing pop-punk/rap. oddly enough, the Prodigy, even though electronic/dance, seem to adopt the punk ways quite well. and another band called prong. their a hardcore/almost industrial british band who really kicks ***.
