So i know that i have a bad rod bearing on cylinder #2 but I found all this in the oil pan.
Image
On the left are three allen head bolts two are the same size and the one in the middle is a little fatter
on the right is a pile of metal shavings and chunks of what look like cast iron
Image
just a pic of the stuff in the pan.
this may not be that strange but I have no idea where it came from. the bottom end and the top end look fine to me

The engine is a ka24e and it only has 116,xxx miles on it
throw me ideas of what you think it is or where to look to see where the chunks and bolts came from, thanks.

Check the piston skirts and the timming sprockets for missing teeth. No clue on the bolts.

looks like the bolts are from the timing chain guides. One of the guides fell off and got destroyed, that is what most of the bigger chunks are in the pics. all the metal shavings are from the timing chain grinding down the timing cover. Those shavings are what I am guessing led to the bearing failure.

Or even more important, how often was it changed?

I agree that those look like timing chain guide chunks and bolts. I would look into replacing the entire timing set... or maybe just an engine swap? You'll want to check for compression (time it as best you can and do a compression and leak-down test. I believe it's an interference engine, so you could have multiple bent valves. The more I think about it the more I would just look for a clean used engine...

I dont know about the oil. I just got the truck not that long ago. i had just bought the oil to change it and it started knocking. I am looking for a new engine now but it is proving to be more difficult than i expected.

What year is your engine? Your rod bearing MAY have gone bad from oil starvation brought on by clogged oil galleys in the crank itself. I think this because I read an old (2003) thread where the owner described plastic shavings from the chain guide making up the same kind of clogs in his crankshaft.
