Okay just read an old thread about fuel (from 2006), but still have the same questions....Sorry I might be a little slow this morning, Not enough Timmies (the Canadians will know what I mean)

Anyway, getting to my question, my V user manual suggests 91 Octane Fuel (Supreme in Ontario), but the previous threads state this will produce lower fuel economy, but is cleaner for the engine......The 87 Octane Fuel (Regular in Ontario) will give me better milage but is dirtier. I get all that too.....So I now called the dealer and he said "91 will be better mileage, but not required, only 87 is. Nissan always puts 91 in the manual to allow better mileage".......

Which one do you use or suggest???? Any mechanics or dealers who now "dirty little secrets" about fuel they wanna spill......

I know with the sportier motors, premium is recommended because a lower octane fuel will cause the engine to experience some knock, so the computer will retard the timing, and you will lose performance, and probably gas mileage. Don't know how that ties into a small econo motor like in the versa.

PS: Timmies is the devil. People line up for 20 minutes and block an entire lane of traffic right by my house, just to get into the drive thru.

The versa is an entry lever car, its meant to run on 87. This would be like filling your riding lawn mower up with really expensive gas

I run race gas in my lawnmower. That thing puts out 15 horsepower, all motor.

Well we know the Canadian cars have the same engines and I doubt Octane 87 here is equivalent 91 in Canada. I'd use the 87 since the cars were designed to run on it. Octane is a measurement to resist knocking. The more you compress gas, the easier it is for it to spontaneously combust (knocking). The higher you go in octane, the higher it resists knocking. In theory, there shouldn't be any gas mileage difference in Octane levels, but due to the ethanol used to raise the octane, you get less power from the same volume. Less power = more consumption.

BTW: When Hurricane Juan came through Halifax, Timmies was the only place that had power in my wife's neighborhood.

I used 85 octance in Colorado and didnt notice and change in performance or knocking. Actually, my mileage increased noticeably, but I also had a net decrease of 5000 feet during that 300 miles stretch.

Use whatever is cheapest that doesn't cause knocking over 1600RPM. The ECU will compensate. In Iowa, 89 octane is often checaper than 87.

Since higher octane is more difficult to ignite, not only do these cars not need it, it won't fully cumbust so a lot of fuel goes out the exhaust.
