Ok, so I was chaning my transmission fluid on my SR and when I took the shifter out there was this bent gasket.

Heres the gasket its self

Heres how the shifter came out (minus one of the snap rings) From left to right, gasket in question, plastic peice, then shifter.

The gasket was under the plastic peice that is under the shifter. My friend told me that little plastic peice is a pain to get out on his KA but mine just lifted out.

Heres the gasket sitting on the plastic piece (its actually turned upside down so the side with the gasket would be on the bottom if it were placed in the transmission)

And finally heres just a shot of the transmission showing where the metal gasket would sit with the plastic peice and the shifter ontop of it.

Well looking at the service manual it calls it a "spring" so I imagine it should look like that.

But does anyone know if it was supposed to come out that easy?

Yes. Because its a spring it pops out when you dissemble the shifter.

its a tension retaining spring. after you get the hole shifter back together, it holds tension on the bottom of the plastic peice, effectively making the shifter move a little, but still feel solid. if you dont put it back in, i suspect it will move up and down with alittle play, and probably vibrate more.
