What forward facing sensor is in the overhead console?

I have a 2006 M35x with adaptive cruise. I figured the sensor for this option was the one in the lower grill by the left fog light. I just noticed another forward facing sensor in the overhead console above the mirror. The tint in the windshield is actually formed to allow this sensor to get a clear view forward. Does anyone have any idea what this sensor is for? Is it for auto dimming head lights?

Thanks! I always thought the lane departure system worked off of sensors under the car that detected the painted lines in the road. But you are correct. the car must have some cool logic in the computer to determine the lane departure.
