what exactly is this thing?

im trying to figure out why my car wont idle when its cold. ive messed with the idle settings and it still doesnt like the cold. i checked my idle control valve, and when you blow through it it only lets about 1/10 of the air you blow pass through, i dont know if its supposed to do this but i figures i might as well add it in here. also, what is the round black canister that is located in the top left corner(when your looking at the engine bay from the front of the car) of the engine bay? it has 3 hoses coming off of it, and it has a solenoid on it, but i didnt hook it up for reasons i dont understand. the wire that goes into it seems to go to the knock sensor, according to the fsm. if anyone knows what might be going wrong, please let me know. thanks, tim

just makins sure, cause you don't say any where, you have a CA18DET, correct?

Right, assuming you have a CA then check the idle switch and ecu temp sensor.

yeah, sorry, i do have a ca, and i think i found the problem, but it still doesnt answer the question of what the that cylinder is at the top left of the engine bay. its not in the fsm, and i havnt seen it on any other cars, but it has 3 lines that go to the fuel pressure regulator, and the wire that goes to it ends up at the knock sensor, according to the fsm. i havnt seen too many ca18s, so they might have this, but im confused as to what it is

Anything connecting the F/P regulator to the knock sensor is very incorrect! Sounds below ghetto to me. Like themadscientist says, post a pic.
