Ok, I've got my CA18 sitting on an engine stand right now, and I need to know what I should replace before putting it in the car. Right now (some of these are obvious, but I need a full list) I'm thinking:

Rear main seal,cam seals,Spark Plugs,Valve cover Gaskets,Finisher? (covers plugs) gasket,Any bad nuts / bolts,Engine Mounts...

I know there's more, but I can't think of it. What am I missing?

That is all that I am doing, but I have seen guys go all out. Head gasket, mnifold gaskets, oil pan gasket, rings, bearings, etc.

You should replace the clutch and re-surface the flywheel while its out.

Before I would do that, I would pop off your transmission and have a look at it. If it looks new(er) then I say leave it be for now. If you plan on winding up the boost right off, then mabye replace it. No need to spend money that is better saved for other things. But yes, if you plan on big power soon after install, do it now.

Hehe, well actually I've already had a look at the clutch, and it's bad enough that it warrants posting pictures of, lol. It's almost reflective!

So yeah, I definately need the clutch and flywheel, I actually had that on my list, I just neglected to post it.

Thanks for the opinions, I'll keep you updated.

Good call on the bearings! I need to check mine, but I don't have an engine stand yet. I will have to do that just before I put it in...

How hard is it to check the bearings? I know I should, but I don't want to do anything too drastic because the car's been down for so long and everyone in my family wants it out of the garage, lol.

btw, I already took off the oil filter and I was planning on doing the water pump :)

Wait, it's that easy? I thought they were covered by something, at least the con rods right?

Well, it's almost that easy, you can check for play (not sure the right term here off the top of my head) of the rod bearings by trying to wiggle the rods from below and see if you can, normally you shouldn't be able to or at least not noticibly so.. but yeah to actually check the bearings just unbolt stuff.

Now, there is a REMOVAL sequence for the main girdle / crank caps in the FSM (page EM-34, 88 in the non-broken PDF):

Front &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Rear4 &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp 8 &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp 9 &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp 6 &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp 23 &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp 7 &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp 10 &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp 5 &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp 1

(when looking from below, obviously, or when the engine is flipped over on a stand)

the rods don't really matter which order you take them off.

Assembly is, as they say, the reverse order of disassembly. (or see FSM EM-41)

When you get it down to looking like this one, then you can start doing some inspections. Rod bearings will tell you the condition of the main bearings. If you see heavy wear or a slight copper/brownish tone on the rod bearings, then the mains are beat-down as well: Isn't she lovely;) ?
