I have a terrible rattling noise in the trunk area of my 07 M35 Sport that is driving me absolutely NUTS. It's only noticeable at slow speeds which seems somewhat common because I've poured over the forums and it appears that other people are/have experienced it.

This is what I have done so far:

Removed entire trunk lining, spare tire, jack, etc. Everything. Didn't make a difference
Put Sponges and towels between the sheet metal of the trunk. No dice.
Road in the trunk. Noise is coming from the wheel area on both sides, but mostly on the drivers side.
Put the car on the rack. Drivers side shock was in bad shape so I replaced them both. Nothing changes
Put the car back on the rack. Inspected (with the help of my mechanic) the suspension. Nothing looks out of the ordinary, nothing broken, etc.
Found the carbon canister to be loose. Secured it by putting a couple of pieces of heater hose under it and bolted it back on. It is very secure as of midnight PST.

STILL.

Someone please help. I'm about to go ballistic, or my Girlfriend is going to kill me soon because I can't stop obsessing over it!

Thanks so much!

Well, the only thing I can find wrong w/the above is that you've got the road in the trunk. I would take it out and put it back. Roads classically have gravel on them and other things that might rattle. Otherwise?

Hopefully someone herein will have a fix.

Welcome to the forum.

Have you tried lookn at your muffler heat shields? I had some rattle there a long time ago and it was rocks stuck and I just bent them left and right to knock em loose. Another thing to check is maybe your license plate, een though you said it sounds like wheel wells. Try reving it at idle to see if it is the heat shields, sometimes that will tell you.

I have a 2008 M35 Sport and had very bad rattling noise coming from the rear as well. I had my wife drive the car around with me in the rear seat. My problem was the rear deck behind the rear seat where the 10" subwoofer was installed.

I removed the rear seats and rear decking, took the crappy 10" Bose Sub and replaced it with a enclosed 12" Infinity Sub in the trunk, and covered the rear metal decking with dynoliner (sound deadner). No rattles now..

Does ur rattle sounds like this..Check out this video on YouTube:

That's my car with the rattle it seem to be coming from the rear deck but it's actually from under the car near the rear wheels.. I took it to a mechanic I was referred and he finally got it fixed.. He changed some rear links
& bushings and he said he fixed something
With a crossmember it been 8 days and no rattle..

try checking the rubber exhaust hangers -- one or more could be worn down, thus not deadening the sound of the exhaust -- which may cause the vibration/rattle from underneath.

I went thru a similar thing before I did my exhaust change -- it drove me crazy!!! just out of luck I was under the car and I shook the exhaust piping from left to right and noticed one side was more 'free' than the other -- ultimately noticed I had a worn thru rubber exhaust hanger.

Once i changed it out, no more rattle....solved. I picked up really thick ones from Autozone - under 5 bucks....

it could be a long shot, but it won't hurt to check. good luck

Got the car back. While the back seats were out they looked and didn't see anything. I checked the amp under the rear deck and it is mounted solidly.

I also checked the speaker and as far as I can tell it is okay.

The muffler heat shields seem to be very "flimsy." Is that normal? I taped them to the rear skid plate with some foil tape and it didn't help. I'm just wondering if the shop forgot to put something back on after the last service.

I'm going to have the rear links looked at this week. Thanks for all the help!

Sorry for the late update. This was indeed the shock mounts.

The Dealer wanted keep my car and install them, but I live 100 mi from there so I asked if I could just take it to the Nissan Dealership in my town. They said "No." I said, "Okay, can I purchase the parts at the Nissan Dealership?" She said "No, they have to be Infiniti parts."

I said "Alright, can I purchase the parts from you?" I got a sigh, and an "Okay, I guess" from the Service Manager.

So I paid about $500 for the parts and went on my way. When I got back to my house I opened the brown bag they had packed all the parts into, to find that each individual part was labeled Nissan, in Nissan packaging. Needless to say I was a little disappointed so the next day I took my parts to the local Nissan Dealership. I wasn't too shocked to find that the Infiniti dealer charged me MORE THAN DOUBLE for the same exact part numbers.

I ended up installing the parts and it fixed the problem. I won't be taking my car back to that dealership. Which is also where I purchased the car.

To anyone else experiencing a rattling sound at low speeds over bumps, a really common issue with this car is that the E-Brake becomes loose and starts rattling. The fix is as simple as tightening a little screw near the E-Brake pedal.
