What does this witch do?

When i looked at the pedals i saw a swich right where the gas pedal is at.What does this switch do. Is it a safety switch? Almost looks like the Park netural switch on a M/T. Is the gas pedal supposed to touch?

If it is an Auto, I have heard autos have a switch under the gas pedal that open up the throttle more when you floor it or something.
