Here's what happened: Bush had some tax cuts, we lost revenue, and we didn't cut services to go with them.

EDIT:
Alternatively, we lost revenue because there was a recession, but people didn't need the services we were paying for before any less.

Not only did we not cut services, we bloated the size of the federal government to unsustainable levels.

Bombing and shooting brown people costs us a ton of money, as well. :(

It also means we have millions of people who are out of work, thus they are receiving unemployment payments and/or food stamps instead of having a job and paying taxes. Yes, we have bloated government spending but the graph will reverse itself if and when the job market actually recovers. Look at the Depression era on the graph. Same thing as now.

Are we actually doing anything in Libya anymore? If Iraq and Afghanistan only cost $608 million each, we'd be in a very different financial position.

If NATO is conducting operations in libya the united states will be in libya. at one point a Iraq and afghanistan only cost 608 million dollars. I have deep reservations about this operation because it is similar to the operations in iraq. lol I am not unpacked in thought through all aspects of the issues in libya. my impression of the whole situation in libya is the people revolted, started a civil war, the libyan armed forces crush them and now we the west are coming to the rebel aid.

To me this all seems very formulaic. We don’t like a leader of a sovereign country. We marginalize the leader and make him into a social pariah (sometimes it is very well merited). And when we get the chance, we bomb the s*** out of his country and create a bigger humanitarian problem that requires the international community or ourselves to clean up for years. I was against Operation Noble Anvil then and I still condemn the action today. If a foreign power did to the United States, what NATO did in Kosovo, it would be on like Donkey Kong. We would not put up with it. Kosovo has ALWAYS been a sovereign part of Serbia.
And please people, don’t jump my case by using examples of the Bosnia Civil War. The two are separate wars.

I wouldnt down play the importance of the Sub Prime Lending and the ensuing Liquidity crisis as to the reason why we have lost revenue. Especially, at the state and local levels. People who are on unemployement (casuality of the Liquidity crisis) or have lost their homes (and are now not paying property taxes), hurt a system that defined its revenue streams and spending on much higher levels.

Re: Libya
I know that we're a big part of Libya, but I kinda still don't know the answer. What are we doing in Libya, lately?

Re: Housing Bubble
I agree, and in my head, that was all wrapped up in "recession."

I am sure we are running Support, Command Control, SIGINT, and ELINT operations for the strike forces. Though I keep hearing a few reports of our strike air craft running sorties.

Housing Bubble:
I just wanted to unpack that a little, so that people dont confuse our out of control spending at the Governmental Level as the sole reason for current Debt Crisis.

Also, the other thing not to lose sight of is that not only are we playing a role in Libyan operations.
We also have forces in Djibouti conducting Global War on Terror in the Horn of Africa, Protection of Shipping (POS) and Maritime Security Operations (MSO) against Piracy in the Gulf of Aden, forces in the Philippines conducting Global War on Terror, forces in Korea, Europe, Japan, and Peace Keeping Operations in the Sinai Peninsula… We have a lot going on around the world.

Dammit.

I still remember what I wrote:

Bee-bobba-reebop, rhubarb pie!

It's an NPR thing; you wouldn't get it.

Don't make assumptions - you could be way wrong.

I happen to listen to many NPR programs all the time - in my car radio to and from work every day and many mornings on weekends.

I am aware of that. It was still totally out of context - even the latest post still is, but I am choosing to leave this one in for now.

i could be wrong but i went back and reread the rules of the forum and i dont believe i saw any rules about staying on topic?

the only example of what can pass for justification for what you are doing is:

"This forum is a place for discussing current events, political situations and other issues that are not car related. It is your soap box for discussing these events and debating your position.

1) This forum is not for car questions, car pictures or other matters that are properly presented in the other NICO forums. "

EDIT:
i admit that some of it can be thrown into the general forum, but its not like i went and created a PIES OF THE WORLD thread and posted it here. If it happens to come up mid thread, and it keeps the forum lively, i dont see the harm in these posts. Without them, im fairly certain this place would die pretty quickly.

If the postings cause the deviations to go completely off-line, then I will still choose to be tyrannosau ... er ... tyrannical in my assessment and remove them.

If it bugs you ... tough. Deal with it.

Jesse Jackson Jr is most likely wrong about his assertion that Apple's iPad is putting Borders and Barnes and Noble out of business. I suspect that Amazon and the Kindle is probably a more likely reason why. Personally, I would answer that Borders and Barnes and Noble are probably attempting to put themselves out of business by failing to change with the market conditions (change to the technology) and holding on to legacy business models. More so Borders than Barnes who has the Nook.

Look what RedBox and Netflix did to Blockbuster. Do you blame RedBox and Netflix? Times change, technology changes, successful companies see it coming and conform, otherwise they go under. Such is life.
