nothing.

its 2 random letters thrown together to designate an engine series.

just like SR, or KA, or CA or VQ or VK.

it does not mean race bred.

Actually, the RB does stand for something...This coming from a Nissan trained mechanic friend of mine here. Rythm and Balance.

Well, on that note can you prove to me that it absolutely doesn't stand for anthing? Other wise, I should call BS for general purpose.

Funny, I thought I was being the bad guy with my last quote.

How do we know that Nissan didn't nickname them here in Japan. There were several motors the U.S. didn't get, and for all we know maybe in Japan they did have a meaning.

Hell, car some car companies give their cars different names for different parts of the world that they will be sold in.

Example,JDM- Silvia, 180SXU.S. 240SX

JDM-SoarerU.S. SC300, SC400, SC430

Those are just to name a few, I am pretty sure you get what I am getting at. I'm just saying, unless we know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, we shouldn't be knocking heads trying to say who is right. If you do have proof, I will take my licks and shut my trap, but, like you, until someone proves me wrong, I have to give my friend the benifit of the doubt.

Don't we already have a 3 page, very pointless thread already covering this topic?

"Rhythm and Balance"?! Are you joking? That sounds like a bad hip-hop group. And since when did the Japanese (who speak the language of Japanese BTW) name their engines in English and abbreviate the English name "Rhythm and Balance"? If in fact they did this, I believe it stands for Race Bread like gawdzilla says

Why did they give the cars English names like Silvia, Soarer, President, Jazz, Civic, etc? Or if not English names, what about English/Roman Letterings: RX-7, NSX, 180SX...? See where I'm going?

On a side note, the RB actually stands for Really Badass. Actually, I was hoping that it meant Randy Britches.

Rye Bread!

6 slices in a straight loaf with one yeasty turbo!!!

I tend to side with Kamin on this one... There are a ton of abbreviations Nissan uses for engines, chassis codes, etc... I've never heard of any evidence that ANY of them have any meaning.

KA, Y33, S13, VQ, RB, SR,

just codes.. random codes..

I looked on answers.com and they said it stood for "Race Bred", and here is their reference. I don't know how credible this is so take it with a grain of salt. I still don't believe it stands for anything, certainly not rythm and balance. hahaha that still cracks me up! Somebody's pulling your friend's tit.

Especially when applied to a group of pop-locking acrobats.

My guess would be it has to tie some how back to the block "material" (iron in this case) and the number of cylinders. WIth the following numbers/etters denoting volume, valve train, induction, etc.

I'm curious now and will look for some logical and verifiable information.

Why can't it just stand for a rebirth of the R380 engine or R380 beta, as in second iteration(although I guess it would be the third with the detuned S20 being the second).

Or why can't it mean nothing at all? What does the VQ stand for? Nothing. But I am sure in a few years when everyone forgets about anything but whatever they throw in the new GT-R, there will be threads on it standing for veritable quickness.

Wasn't the first RB the SOHC 20 anyhow? How can you associate that with strong racing heritage?

I think RB has some significant explination, they arent just random letters thrown together. Just because you dont know or dont understand dosent mean its not possible. Have any of you ever known or worked with an engineer before? Once you do, it will be kinda easy to understand how randomly idiotic they can be with their reasoning. Not a day goes by when I dont want to punch an engineer in the face for their ill-logical placement of a component or its design.

All Nissan engines that have a "V" in the first letter are all V series and the Q would indicate it's an all aluminum 6 cylinder, versus the VG being a comniation aluminum/iron and the VH being an all aluminum 8 cylinder.

Trust me someone inside of Nissan knows the naming logic, it just a matter of us finding it.
