i bought an rb25 turbo to upgrade my rb20, but the turbo has a little shaft play. I called a local turbo rebuilder and they said it would run about 600 bucks, but they could 'machine the turbo , install new, steel blades with 'more aggressive angles' and of course replace the seals. they said at 15psi, this rebuilt turbo could potentially support 350+ hp. whether they are blowing smoke up my *** or not is a good question, but If for 600 bucks, I could have a bad*** turbo "brand new" and would bolt up with no mods needed........that would be a great deal. yah....no???

The Turbonetics T3/T4 is around $765 brand new and Precision is probably cheaper. Would never spend 600 bucks on a used "small" turbo but that´s me.

i agree with mike

and since its a ball bearing turbo it will have a small bit of shaft plat (front to back NOT side to side)

i wouldnt worry too much about it.

for a guy like me who is only looking to make maybe 300-350 hp, wouldnt it be a good option? especially since i dont have to fit new lines and have a new down pipe fabbed up? plus it will spool qucker than a large turbo. of course a bigger turbo for 700 bucks may be better for the next guy looking for more power, but your looking at 700 for the turbo, 100 for the new lines, 300-400 for a new downpipe, plus wastegate etc...... but you said a little shaft play is normal?

i wouldnt worry about the shaft play as long as there is no signs of oil int the compressor or turnine housing. my stock rb25 turbo had more shaftplay than i thought was normal but it spooled great sounded perfect never ever smoked and never used even a drop of oil. I would bolt the turbo on and go have fun. Ball bearing turbos seem to have a fair amont of side to side play, as long as there is not enough up and down to cause interference dont worry about it.

You got a good point, no idea to buy a 500 hp turbo to a 350 hp car car.I just think these turbo´s are pure stone age and most T25 and 28´s got crappy quality. I think you can find a better and more high tech turbo for around 600 USD.

For an example, we gained both spool and joy when we swapped in a non BB Mitsu TD04HL-19T in a RB25, a pretty cheap turbo but man, that thing pumps air like crazy! And it lasts forever, they normally last 300 to 400.000 km without problems on 300 hp cars and can max around 380 hp and 1.6 bar.

It's not a bad deal for your goals. Those aftermarket t3/t4's are nice but the cost of buying new oil lines, water lines, ic pipes, adapters, down pipe etc etc.... they all add up.

Promise you wont laugh now! It´s stock mounted on Volvo V70R AWD 265 hp. You can but it at your local Volvo dealer or some turbo company.

I normally use it on 330-360 hp cars and the smaller 18T on 300 hp cars.
