I went and looked at a 2002 Infiniti I35 Sport today. It had 64K on the odometer and was generally in pretty good cosmetic shape (a few scrapes and dings here and there, nothing that's not easily fixable). It idled and drove very well. The dealer offered it to me at $15,000. However, after a test drive I don't think its worth near that, and here's why:
1) This car seems to have been smoked in. It smelled of an awful air freshener and had a burn mark on the shifter trim.
2) The trunk was gross. It appears to be missing the trim piece that covers the spare tire because there is a noticable bump in the trunk liner where the spare is. There was also a URINAL CAKE, of all things, in the spare tire well.
3) Drivers' side speakers inoperable, both front and back.
4) Needs brakes all around, maybe new tires, and rims show some curb rash.
5) When the car is going straight ahead, the steering wheel is turned about 15 degrees off center. Needs an alignment perhaps?
6) HID lights aren't the same color, one is more blue than the other. I think it might need a new bulb.
7) This car has been on the dealer's lot for over a year, and the Carfax report says there was at least one owner, but they don't know anything more about where the car was registered.
So given all that, I was thinking along the lines of offering $9000 plus my 1995 G20t in trade assuming they fix everything that is wrong with it and the techs at the dealership I work for give it the all-clear. The mechanical issues I have no problem with since they'll be fixed, but the fact that the car has been on this dealer's lot over a year suggests that they may want to dump it. What do you guys think?
