What do you think happened to the Z's lights?

350Z, 05' 14k miles

I put some headlight covers, plastic cover painted same color as car, on the Z. Looked nice. well, about 2 or 3 months later i dont know how it happened and when it happened but my headlight assembly, both lights, looked almost shattered but cracked from the inside of the light. the dealership is covering this, they said do not put the covers back on. do you think it was the covers that maybe trapped heat into the light? the covers only cover up the orange reflector and about an 1-2 inches all the way around the light. any idea before i get my new lights on and put my covers back on? Thanx!!
