well let me tell you what had led to this moment. I asked him for the VIN when I first called up to ask about the s14. He said that he didn't have that available, his son was driving it. What about the pink slip? He was out at dinner, doesn't have it with him. So he said to call him tommorrow (Saturday), I was busy Saturday, so I didn't call him until the evening. Says he couldn't find the pink slip (title), and he was not at home. Fine. I'm interested in the car so I drive out on Sunday Morning (drove 2.5 hours).
Saw the car and started noticing some things. The hood was missing the labels (stickers) and such. The emblem on the hood was different than the emblems on the trunk. Fine, I ask him about it, he said a tree branch fell on the hood so he had it replaced. Okay, I can accept that. Then he popped open the hood. Hmmm. I noticed some overspray of clear coat in the engine bay, okay probably from the painting of the hood. Then I was just kinda bothered by why the engine bay was different than the car. As I'm looking at the engine, checking out the oil cap, the oil (dark), my wife calls me over to the driver's side door, she pointed out that the paint seemed bubbly and parts were peeling ( the passenger side was okay ). So hmmm, I started tapping around the driver's door and noticed that there were parts that sounded more dense than other parts (sign of bondo or body filler) So I said to the seller hmmm. I think this car has been hit from this side. He says no, impossible, so I pointed out all the things that lead me to that conclusion.
He pointed out the VIN number on the door panel matches the VIN on the car. I think to myself, great!, but you don't have to replace the door to fix it. So he alterted me to this and I started checking the VIN sticker on the panels to the car. Sure enough, the VIN on the drivers side front fender did not match. I brought this up to him...Suddenly he remembers that he changed the fender too when the tree fell on it.
Alright, well I drove 2.5 hours I'm gonna test drive this thing. Engine's strong, transmission shifts good, CC, AC, PDL, PW all works, but something's weird. Ah-ha, the steering wheel is ****ed to one side. Once again, the guy says, impossible - it seems straight to me. I pointed out that the gap on one side is larger than the other. He says oh, okay, well it always seems straight to me. Well now we're back to negotiating the price. I got him down to a decent price knowing that the car had been in an accident. I told him, you need to have the pink slip to sell me the car ( really wanted to see the title to make sure it wasn't salvaged), he says well, I dont' have it. I told him, well I'd buy the car from you if the car has a clean title. So I copied down the VIN, came home and found out it was salvaged. The guy's only owned it for 1 month, as opposed to the year he said. BUYER BEWARE. I think I'm gonna call him back and offer him $1k for it. (I can always use a KA with only 66K miles and the SE stuff)
