The GT is a second generation of Garrett Tech, which was not available in the T series. So they may have used a T3 frame with a bored T25 housing and a stage 3 wheel in the back. That doesn't make it a GT, but technically it would be a 28/71. Basically just a T3 without the ball bearings, anyone else?

Well, not all of the GTs are ball bearing. It also has to do with redesigned blades which are supposed to be more efficient, in one respect or another. But IIRC, the GT2871 is a ball bearing.

You can tell by the r and rs that follow the number. R uses roller bearings and rs uses ball bearing. The last two numbers are the size of the exhaust turbine and the first two are the turbo designation. So a GT2871r is a new Garrett tech T28 turbo with a 71mm exhaust wheel and a roller bearing CHRA instead of journal bearing.

This may be a perfectly fine turbo, as it is probably not too horribly matched on the wheels, depending on it's choice of a compressor wheel. But effectively it is just a T3 turbo you can bolt your T25 turbo outlet to. You would have to make a new downpipe that uses V-flange, and probably a new manifold if the turbine flange is not T25. I think you can do better with a straight T3 with a 5 bolt, if I were asked.
