im really wanting to go sr20 on my 96 S14, the only thing holding me back are the potential legal problems with smog.I dont have any family out of state so the out of state registration trick wont work for meive searched around and actualy asked this question before and only recived recomendations and misinformation form people outside of california. what im looking for is information from people living in california who have actualy done this and have experience.

Cost me 200 bucks. :( I had 2 bills in my hand when I shook hands with the smog tech. He knew what was up.

In West Covina, it shouldn't be too bad, the farther you get west of the 57 though, the rougher it's going to get. Honestly, ask around. Go to the RSR meet on Sunday and talk to some 240 guys who live in that area. I live out in BFE, so my technique won't apply to you.

Damn, that must suck living down in the states for that reason. Up here in Canada, they don't even think twice about smog and stuff like that. No laws of that sort here, or at least in Alberta. Can drive with NO muffler, and an airplane engine in my car if I really wanted to. Hehehe.

Good luck with the 96 bro. I went with a pre-95, non-OBDII car for a reason. You'll actually have to find a spot, where they'll hook the plug up to someone else's car so that they get the right diagnostic information out of it.

Isn't all jdm motor swaps illegal? Well not all like the jdm 3sgte into the all tracs or mr2s because they can still use their emissions equipments with it...but as for engines that never came to the U.S. it's a bad thing to have in your car!

Just take it somewhere that'll hook it up. LA and SD have a lot of places that hook it up. Better thing to do though is just ask around. You can go to life plaza on sundays (57S to 60W) go to the under ground parking garage after 8, there's a lot of people there that have JDM swaps, they should be able to help you out

yeah it doesnt work like that because you'd need all the sensors hooked up to it too...and they would actually need to be getting the right signals ect. etc...unfortunately

hey polys13, that plaza's always busy at night. why? i'll be driving down fullerton and every single time I see nice (most times) cars pull into the plaza. all the signs are in characters so i don't really know what's going on over there at such late times. I know there's restaurants, but what else?

I dont' think you should be posting this kind of information online as internet police can crack down on those very few shops left that will help us out. Do it in e-mail or pm.

Down there near Life Plaza, there isn't much going on. Just Life Plaza, Shell gas station, The Boat, some PC bang place and a pool hall. Oh yea, I also must mention there's a police station office in that plaza too. It's pretty much just an Asian hang out at night, mostly riced out Hondas and other misc. European cars. (Damn spoiled kids).

But if you're really serious about getting a smog test done, e-mail me. I know a few crooked guys out here in the San Gabriel Valley area that'll do it for you. If worse comes to worse, find someone to take the test for you if you really think you can't pass. I'm sure someone here would help ya out by donating their S14's exhaust fumes for an hour or two for a test. Good luck.

They go by the VIN. How would that work? I guess if you swapped the plates and the front VIN tag it might work.

Most people will flame you because that's a question that's been asked and answered MANY times. But I don't care..

I've got a 1995 too. I'm looking to get an SR installed. Phase 2 does it for 1500 labor, a clip will probably be 3000 after shipping and everything, so you're looking at around 5000 after everything for a STOCK S13 SR. If you want an S14 motor add about 1,000 to that. If you want an S15 motor add about 3000+ to that.

I just finished up my second swap. Came out pretty well, a little better than mine. I'm always down for some engine swapping, let me know if you want some help.

wow, talk about bring a thread from the depths of nico, last post was in 2003.

And on another note, The great state of california's ARB states that no vehicles emissions equipment can be modified from stock without an exemption, the sr motor doesn't use any of the emission crap that the KA uses and doesn't have a carb number. Therefore, no matter how much dyno time you do to get it to pass the sniffer you will always fail the visual, unless you "know" the guy.

Besides it would probably be cheaper to just pay someone than actually pay for dyno tuning to get it to pass 1/2 the requirement.
