(Gross story ahead, for those who might be offended.)
I had an old roommate who would keep a bottle of Febreeze under his desk, and as soon as he ripped one, he's douse the air around him with Febreeze. I guess it was better than the alternative (this guy must have been eating hot garbage for those smells) but now the smell of Febreeze reminds me of farts.
So! I would suggest using Renuzit. You can use it on air and fabric, and leaves a pleasant, lack-of-smell smell. I've used it on everything from month-old shirts under my bed to heavily-used-but-free couches off of Craigslist.
