Hello dude. I am also a rookie but I just want to answer your question before you get flamed for even making this question

Ok, the first thing you need to start drifting is a FR car.

Second one, get some info on drifting. There is a sticky post in this same forum where the basics of drifting are very well explained so go and read it. You can also try the "Drift Bible" DVD.

Third, one open and empty space where you can practice without possibility of hurting other people.

You dont need to change anything in your car to start drifting. This far I have found that it is better for newbies like us to use stock cars. I still have a long road to follow til I will need to upgrade/turbo my motor or do an expensive suspension work. Right now I am looking for a Megans coils kit just beacuse my stock suspension really needs a replacement and it is cheap.

So dont worry. Just go out to practice and have fun.

Get an LSD or have your differential welded.

yeah get your diff welded its cheap and makes dirfting a hella fun, as you get better just get coilovers and things like that, also if you dont know how to weld your diff then go to a car shop where hondas nissans evo you know wherever people go to buy stuff at and ask them if they know anyone that can weld it for you

check for local events in your area!!!

you can only learn so much by d!ck around in a parking lot. go to events, be safe, dont worry about cops and learn more in 1 day than you will in a year of parking lot drifting.

Yea just try and focus on the basics first (i.e. getting you car sideways by throttle or e-brake) and go to as many drift events as you can. and dont be afraid to ask lots of questions.....
