You may want to try posting that in the Classic Z Forum Section

People on this Forum tend to get mad when people ask anything other then things about the Z32 300zx 1990-1996 Model Z

you car has an R200

the R200 was available in 2 basic versions, the long snout found in 280Z's, 280ZX's Z31's 200SX and probable more that I'm missing

the short snout, found in J30's, 240sx's n/a z32's and I'm sure plenty more I'm missing

to complicate things a bit the earlier carriers used 12 mm bolts to hold the ring gear onto the carrier, all later models long and short used 10mm bolts to hold the ring gear to the carrier, otherwise the carriers are all interchangable

pinion flanges vary quite a bit, and the viscus units require special output shafts that your car does not have

you might want to search through az_zbums site for z31 specific data

While you're on 86's Evildky this question goes out to you. I mentioned mine occasionally overheated this last summer and with the windows down I did not notice the tinge of antifreeze odor. During winter, windows up, heater or air on, it smelling a little sweet inside as well as losing a small amount of coolant. Is the heater lines or core configured so the col prate will be easily identified? or is there something you may already suspect from description or experience? Thanks Guy

No no no no no. This information is incorrect. The early long nose r200's have 10mm ring gear bolts. The later long noses and short noses use 12mm ring gear bolts.

And to 86300ZXVH45, it is your heater core most likely. Pressure test your coolant system, and find your leak.

nope, the 78 had 12mm ring gear bolts, and the z31's use 10mm bolts, at least the ones I have

Wait, isn't the Z32 a R240 or something like that?

To the OP, just get a differential out of any 84-86 300ZX (NA or turbo doesn't matter) if yours is busted. To the best of my knowledge, every other diff requires much more work and is not bolt in. Even the 87-89 NA ones are different, different bolt pattern for the diff on the driveshaft.

the TT Z32 has the R230VLSD, the n/a has the short snout R200VLSD, all Z31's have the long snout R200, the 88SS got the VLSD, and all turbo's form 4/87-89 got the CLSD, if you cna find a CLSD donor that's but nice but they are hard to come by, I did get mine at a junkyard for $150

Yeah. It's just SSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO difficult to change the companion flange.

Any diff that isn't the same ratio as what came with the car will require a different speedometer pinion gear to keep the speedometer anywhere near accurate.

Well Paul, if he can't find an 84-86 in the junkyard but there's an 87-89 there, then by all means he can do that. But, at least where I live, 84-86s outnumber 87-89s in junkyards 10 to 1.

Looking into your crystal ball once pressure tested does the leak become obvious or should I pull tape deck, etc, etc, so I'll have a better look before hand?thanks Racinjitter

the idea behind a pressure test is that once the system is pressurised fluid or air will be easier to detect leakign form the system

Can you be sure that it was never swapped? Did you buy the car brand new? Out of all of the Z's that I have owned, the later R200's all used the 12mm ring gear bolts. Including the short nose's. R180's used 10mm ring gear bolts, right? It just doesn't make sense that they would switch ring gear bolts to a larger size for one year (or a few) then switch back. They did it for strength.

My 84, 85, and 86 T's all had 10mm ring gear bolts. My 87, and both 88's have 12mm ring gear bolts. CLSD's use 12mm ring gear bolts, same as the VLSD's. Also my s13 open rear end uses 12mm ring gear bolts.

ah your right, been a while, I had to rotate my ring gear to load the sides of the bolts when I put the 88VSLD in my 78 housing becausse the holes int he carier were larger than the ring gear bolts, for some reason i was thinking of the bolts threading into the carier and not the gear
