For the longest time the stripe on one side of my bumper has been peeling off so I finally just ripped it all off on the bumper. One problem though: the last owner already lost some of the strip and painted some of it back on. The paint isn't very nice and has holes poking through everywhere. I'm not sure weather I want to completely take off the stripe or replace it.

If I take it all off I'm going to need to get that paint off, which I'm unsure of as I don't want to take off the bumper paint as well. Any ideas folks?

The paint on the early S-chassis cars is pretty durable.

I've done a "de-stripe" on a red vert and had to get rid of the adhesive...

Test various solvents (alcohol / nail polish remover / brake cleaner / acetone / lacquer thinner) on a cotton swab - see if it breaks down the black paint, and if so, move forth with that... Be cautious not to get into the red.

I had pinstripes on my vert back in the day, and wanted them off prior to repainting.

I used one of these pin stripe removal wheels:

Just slap it on the end of a power drill and spin it away like an eraser. Then use a solvent to wash off the extra glue residue that's left over.. really works well. I didn't have any issue with the paint at all.

Do want to get rid of mine (but then get something to replace the "limited edition" section and look OEM). But probably won't do anything until paint and realized I need a new top now too, so too much to do (car has to run correctly still).

Eikon, are you suggesting that for the paint? The factory stripes I can peel off with my hands no problem, and doesn't leave a residue. If I go full tilt and remove it all I would leave the little bit with the Limited Edition though, as that seems easy enough to do.

I'll try it out Greg. I'm just really paranoid about messing up the paint or clearcoat.

Ah, no, if you can peel the striping off by hand, then by all means.. do it. That rubber wheel is for taking off pinstriping that you can't just peel off.

What paint are you worried about taking off? I'm confused.

Ahh.. I get it now.

If it were my car, I'd get some 400 grit and 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper and spend an hour sanding. Be very careful to keep inside the grove and just rub off the black paint. What you have is three layers... oem red base, oem clear, and a nasty homemade black. I would sand off the black rather than using a chemical to break it up. I would feel much more confident about controlling the depth you are affecting with a sandpaper over a chemical.

Wet Sand off with the 400 high grit paper... sure it will take a long time, and you'll wish you had some 120 grit, but the smoother paper will ensure you don't take too much paint off and get into the clear or base. After you get all the black off, go back over it with 600 grit wetsanding to smooth it out nicely. Then put a layer of carnuba wax on it, and it'll wind up being nicer than the rest of the paint on the car.

That just looks like some black spray bomb paint and it should come right off with a damp(not soaked) rag with laquer thinner on it. If your car is clearcoated a little laquer thinner will not damage the clearcoat. It should take the black off easily and then of course you will need to re-wax it. No biggie at all.
