what dictates how much boost you can run?

I am planning a ka-t setup and I just want to know one thing... what dictates the limit of boost you can run (besides turbo). If you put 30 PSI into a stock KA24DE, what would happen to the pistons? I'm sure the rods would bend (right?).

Anyways, most people run 7-9 psi on their turbo setup, but what if someone wanted to run 12 psi? would they just have to upgrade the fuel program and have it tuned (would a JWT ECU work for tuning?) or is it the rods/pistons that limit the stock KA to only 7-9psi?

Thanks

Its all about fuel system and how GOOD you get ti TUNED.

detonation..and how much boost you have when it happens....or to combat that your fuel system

Detonation is probably one of the biggest limitations. But that's a very simplistic view as there are many causes of detonation. Everything from spark plug heat range, to manifold design, to turbo choice, to fuel system capabilities and tuning can change the detonation threshold.

As far as the strength of the internals, we've seen 17 psi hold up on stock internals. The strength of pistons and rods are rarely an issue assuming there is no detonation.

so a fmax stage 2 kit (with jwt fuel rail, Z32 fuel pump, and 50lb injectors) with a JWT ecu (who tunes rich to be safe) and denso iridium plugs (heat range 7 i think) shouldnt have a problem at 10 psi daily/14 psi race should it?

14 psi should put out very very nice power, I'd love to be able to run that safely.

What MAF? The OEM S14 MAF maxes out at about 260 WHP which is about 9-10 psi.

yes, there are people who run 14 psi on that tune. rods wont bend, they are forged, as is our crank, but the pistons may need a little help, ringlands are weak.

with forged pistons, you should have no problem at 14 psi, but I would be skeptical on a stock motor, one in good condition has been known to take 350hp on stock bottom end. but that was one time, one place. I would keep it lower than that as a little safety margin

Weak ring lands are only an issue if you get detonation. While it is nice to have a safety margin, I personally wouldn't go tearing into my motor just for that when some good tuning can be all the precaution you really need.

i agree that just saying detination is an over simplification but i figured by giving him an avenue for searching he would find most of the answers himself, given the harder you have to look for an answer the less likely you are to forget it and also more likely you are to persue methods of combating it. this is why i spend more time reading and less time posting ..because i dont have many of the answers the likes of you have. i learn, and plan therefore when i get back from japan i am less likely to fail..

Ivan (I forget the shop's name) hit 400whp on stock KA.
