Today I was driving and started hearing this hellish whine and smelled burning rubber, which automatically made me realize that there's something wrong with the drive belts.
Luckily I was not far from home and drove about another 2 miles back home, which during the time the whine disappeared.
When I got home and popped the hood I noticed that SOME how the nut that holds the idler pulley down horizontally had fallen off, causing the pulley to no longer be fixed to a single point but rather floating there, with the path of the belt being directed only by the remaining tension on the belt+alternator belt.
I replaced the nut and retightened everything, and the belt is still rubbing.
What makes me wonder is what the heck could have caused it to come off? The last time I touched this nut was about 7 months ago, when I replaced all my idler pulleys.
Could it be correlated to me retightening the alt belt from about two weeks ago? Could it have been overtightened, resulting in the extra tension to slowly "push" at the fan pulley, causing stress on the nut and resulting in it falling off?
I would also like to state I do not have a torque wrench or belt deflection meter.
BTW my car is a 1997 Q45 with 108,000 miles on it.
Thanks for any help.
