What could cause the coil to over heat and burn itself out?

The coil on my titan gets so hot that it overheats and burns its self out.

if i grounded a live wire what could the effects be if any?

About the only thing I know of that will cause the coil to overheat is a shorted wire.

As for grounding a live wire it depend on the wire. If you are just placing the output wire close to ground to look for a spark then it would not be your problem. If you are fully conceting the wire to ground then that could be the problem.

+1... either a short or some sort of corrosion.

Is it under warranty? You could check resistance of it with a multi-meter.
