I finally took apart my spare steering rack. It was in great shape at 137K miles. The original grease from the factory was on the pinion still. The teeth are still sharp on both the rack and the pinion.

But since it was in a state that saw snow it has surface rust. So does anyone know what color it was originally from the factory? I bet Goody can tell me in 2 minutes if he looks under his car! :)

Likely black, possibly silver.

I'm at the coast for a couple of days where it's (always) cold, foggy and wet.......and the Q is parked over a puddle of muddy water. I'll check when I get home to sunny Sacramento on Sunday.

Cold? Whats cold out there 50's? Was a nice 13 degrees yesterday and 18 this morning. My Q loves the cold. Dont have to worry about parking over puddles this time of year. As far as I remember the rack was black when I did my swap. Surprisingly it did not have much road junk or a spec of rust. Was a FLA car.

It does get fairly cold here especially in the mornings. You have to consider that we have 80-100% humidity and is almost always damp which really does effect how cold it is. I would have to say that it felt just as cold here a few weeks ago as it did in Idaho and the temp up there was about 28.
