Heres the deal. I called my insurance company this morning for a quote on how much insurance would cost for my son. I live im Maryland, and as some of you may know they are the most uptight and stict state possibly in the US. My insurance company said I would have to pay $6,000 to $9,000 a month if the car is classified as "sport"

My son was planning on driving my 240sx or Datsun, but I fear that will not be possible... Would any of you know which car would be great to modify, not too expensive, and preferably 4 door (coupes usually "sport car") Thanks NICO members!

A 240sx is not a sports car, nor should it be classified as one. If it is, switch companies because they're idiots.

My 240 was the cheapest out of all of cars to insure. It beat out our 97 Volvo 850 and 96 Jeep Cherokee by quite a bit. And our 07 TL goes without saying.

Get him a Infiniti G20, Sr20de motor 4 door and their built until 2002, Preferably an P11, P10 are older version chassis, good platform to start out at. And they have a Nissan Primera in Japan counter part to get parts off of and mod.

I'm sorry. Those numbers must be wrong. There is absolutely no way insurance would cost 6-9k per month. I doubt it could cost that much per year. You need to call your insurance agent again and check those figures.

BTW, most insurance companies don't care if you consider it a pure-bred sports car or not, they look at the driver (record and experience), the costs to replace vehicle (if full coverage), and the statistics of your area. Some companies may look at the type of car, and in the case of 240s, they would see 2 door, rwd, popular for non-commuter activities (street racing, drifting)- not saying thats right, fair, or accurate, just saying they're looking at the statistics, not whether you believe the car is worthy of the "sports car" moniker. If you want to reduce the premiums, have your son complete a defensive driving course. It might also be advisable to check into other insurance companies as well.

If he exists, get him a grandprix gtp and put it in your name and list him as an occasional driver.

Sports cars would be determined by the car's ISO symbol matched up with a range of VINs - unless you're buying your son an E90 or something, you don't have to worry.

Who is your insurance company? Something certianly sounds a miss. And a 240 is certianly not a sports car in any way shape or form when it is stock.

Quite honestly, your kid would be best served with a car from the early 2000's that's reliable and inexpensive - something like an Accord, Altima, Sentra, Taurus, Malibu...etc. Something safe, and not too fast.

Haha...I lie about my age on everything cyber related. But my son is turning 17 soon, so im around 40-60 year old range.

I actually became a nissan fanatic when living in Yokohama, Japan for 5 years studing abroad.

I did call back the insurance company because I was not sure if the 240sx was a "sport". The good news is that it is not!

Thanks for all your responses! And no thank you for the ignorant and rude ones..,

6k-9k/mo is WAY off. Maybe they meant yearly? Thats STILL WAY off. I pay less on the 240 than any other car I was under. I suggest you take a large deuce in the parking lot of your insurance providers. If you can get in the building, poop on a desk. Then switch to progressive or geico.

Yeah, I'm in PG.. or at least I'm registered there. Insured w/ state farm my 96 accord was $120/month when I was 16, and my 97 240 was $136/month when I was 18. Put on my Dad's policy with me as the primary driver to keep the costs down.

Did they give you a quote for your son being a primary driver on the 240?
