Looks like an I30... what did the car look like that you saw it on?

This (J30)?

or

This?1996-1999 I30 2000+ I30

The I30 is basically a slightly plusher (is that a word?) Maxima produced from 1996-present (actually it's now the I35 with a larger engine). The J30 was a completely different beast with no U.S. Nissan counterpart - Rear wheel drive, love-it-or-hate it styling made from 1993-1997.

It must be the I30 then, because I knew it wasn't the J30 I was familiar with and I was wondering if there may have been a different chassis. The cars I have seen it on (about 5 in the last two days..) did look like a Maxima

Cool... I've had a lot of people get confused looking at those letters... "I saw a new J35 the other day..."

Not good for brand recognition on Infinti's part...

I agree about the confusion between the "I" and the "J". It is an oddly written "I" and could easily be confused with the J30.

Its nice, its got plenty of power. I really dont like a FWD car with so much power that it breaks traction so easily and exhibits such levels of torque steer... Ive driven it, and it is considerably faster than the J30, much more low-end torque. I guess it would be suitable for a family car. It really doesnt fit the "personal performance sedan" market that the J30 cornered, not that it ever was supposed to. much quieter overall than the J30, yet the interior fit and finish is far inferior to the J30.

it does have about 3 times the trunk space, though..

I took an I35 six speed for a ride and the motor is nice but the FWD ruins it's potential. The J is a much more fun car to "drive".

Is it a rumor or fact that Nissan is phasing out the Maxima FWD platform and going to RWD? That might be very interesting.

i obviously agree on the FWD dillema of the I35.

I both want and dont want the new platorm to be RWD. I do, because its always nice to have the superior RWD and the snobishness associated with it...but i also dont want the J30 to be finally surpassed ...( i obviously dont think it has been yet). (G35=too small)

oh well, i guess its time...the J30 had a nice 10 year run.

10 year run? How about 4 year? :pface The J with a 3.5l would be sweet. A new J with a supercharged 3.5? You have to drive a J to know how sweet that combo would be. :D The VG is a fine motor but the J can take so much more.

Too late for RWD... new Maxima is hitting dealers within a few weeks. Built in Tennessee, still FWD, maybe AWD in future?

Info on Nissan website. Looks a bit funky but features should be nice.

I think I'd be satisfied with a FWD car. The fix for torque steer is not to stomp on the gas from a dead start. Just something to get used to. Gotta learn to like RWD for what it does offer (better weight distribution, better steering feel, tighter turns)... not what it doesn't have.

Nobody should drive a RWD car for the sole purpose of avoiding torque steer. A RWD car without LSD or TCS or VDC spins tires too!

Good points. However, the six speed will take off on you. It is too much power to have on the steering wheels. You can dig into every dry surface manouver much better with RWD.

One can learn to live with torque steer. I drove/owned FWD cars for years before I got my J30t and I liked my Honda Lxi quite a bit. But I was raised in the Great White North and drove RWD in all kinds of slippery conditions. RWD is superior IF you can learn to live with it. However, FWD is more useful in snow/ice conditions. The systems are equal, all things considered, in wet weather.

An all AWD system where you could set the front wheels to apply less power when coming out of corners would be ideal. Maximum friction adhesion on the front and all power to the back.

i simply meant the J30 has enjoyed being the best RWD V6 infiniti model for the past 10 years (note i carefully crafted that sentence so as not to infuriate the many Q members amongst us)

i think we all know the answer here: supercharger kit for the existing VG block, with a transmission compromise settling at a Rs5R30A 5 speed manual from a z32. i think that could easily give any J30 another 10 year lease on life as the best RWD V6 infiniti...if not more.

truly, the only thing outdated about it is the lack of traction control, and power to be desired.

nothing a well engineered supercharger kit and racelogic traction control system cant fix...
