I normally don't extend information like this but I have riden in an original one of these but it was black with white racing stripes and I had the "I am not worthy bowing pleasure" to have been the passenger with Mr. Carroll Shelby himself at the wheel.
The Shelby family own the bank in Plano that my mom is Sr. VP of. Carroll's son Pat is the CEO of the bank. Meeting this man was a true highlight of my life as he is a REAL American legend.
And you are correct, the one in the picture is a kit but the one that raced him may not have been. Shelby still makes these in Las Vegas so they may still be on the road. Now you are correct that they are MEGA expensive!!!!
I would look at the guys appearance and you could tell if it were a kit or not. If he has on a solid gold Presidential Rolex then I would say it is the real deal if it was a Casio with a calculator on it then KIT KIT KIT!! Ha!
I have clients with Lamborghini's, Ferrari's and one with a Bugatti Veyron (but he won't drive it). Anyway, the shelby cobra is still the sweetest car I had sat and ridden in.
Interesting thing on the Bugatti, you have only 500 hp all of the time and then you have a key'd ignition type thing that you have to turn on to get the other 500 hp, turn the key and you have 1,000 hp under your feet. WOW! However, according to what I was told you can only drive that thing at full power for 15 minutes and then you run out of gas and tires as you would burn them up almost immediately.
Anyway, anyone who pays $1.3MM for a car that he doesn't drive is both crazy and FILTHY RICH!!!! Ha!
